I have just finished my first pass of the copy edits April provided for book 1 of my urban fantasy. There were several aspects of her profile which made me interested in her as an editor, in particular I have lived in a few countries and know that I have language and formatting habits that are a blend of the versions of English I’ve adopted along the way. I flagged this for her, along with my desire to smooth the reading experience for a majority American audience while still keeping the unique aspects this might add to my voice. I also use some in-world slang, have been very careful to prune certain idioms and similes from my prose that didn’t make sense in world but wanted a second set of eyes on them, and have some frankly bonkers telepathy things going on. She took all of it in stride, paid specific attention to the things I asked for, and honestly picked up on what I was trying to do with very little explanation needed on my part. I accepted almost all of her tracked changes, and the vast majority of her comments I have made slight changes in line with her suggestions. She already has my book 2, and I look forward to working with her on any others in the series!
